Alamosa District - Living Snow Fence

Living snow fence

The Living Snow Fence (LSF) program continues to grow in the San Luis Valley. In 2004, a new Living Snow Fence was installed on La Veta Pass. The Costilla County Soil Conservation District spearheaded the project along with Forbes Trinchera Ranch and the Colorado State Forest Service.

School children from Sierra Grande Elementary in Blanca/Ft. Garland, helped plant Douglas Fir and Lodgepole Pine seedlings. Another 120 seedlings will be planted in May of 2005 consisting of Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir.

The LSF located north of Villa Grove is definitely worth seeing. The Natural Resource Conservation Service is the driving force behind this project since 1998. Following a drought, 2004 saw a replanting of Rocky Mt. Juniper and Ponderosa Pine with the help of school children from Saguache, Center and Moffat schools.
