Colorado State Forest Description
The Colorado State Forest is a 71,000 acre state
trust property located in north-central Colorado.
The Forest stretches some 28 miles north and south
along the Medicine Bow Mountains. It is about
8 miles wide at its widest point, and about a
mile wide at the narrowest. It is a high mountain
forest, elevations range from 8,000 feet to 12,900
feet on the top of Clark Peak. About 52,000 acres
of the Forest are forested. Engelmann Spruce and
subalpine fir dominate the higher elevations,
lodgepole pine and quaking aspen are found at
the mid and lower elevations.
The majority of the State Forest is bordered
by public land. The Routt National Forest lies
to the north and south. The Roosevelt National
Forest lies to the south and east, including the
Rawah and Neota Wilderness areas and Rocky Mountain
National Park lies to the southeast. The western
boundary abuts private land, state trust land,
and Bureau of Land Management lands.
