| The Colorado State Forest is a state trust
property administered by the Colorado State
Land Board (SLB). It is a unique state trust property
in that it was acquired through a land trade with
the US Forest Service and it has its own enabling
legislation (see our History
page for more info). The 5-member SLB has a state
wide staff of only 29, so on-site management of
SLB property is generally accomplished through
leases and contracts between the SLB and private
individuals and/or government agencies.
There are two principle on-site managers on the
Colorado State Forest working under agreement
with the SLB: the Colorado State Forest Service
(CSFS) and the Colorado Department of Parks and
Outdoor Recreation (CDPOR). The CSFS is responsible
for forest management, the CDPOR is responsible
for the recreation management.
The grazing association, mainly consisting of
Silver Spur Ranches, manages the grazing on the
Forest. Other agencies and organization, such
as the Colorado Department of Wildlife, Jackson
County, and private concessions, are also involved
with management on the Forest.

Management activies on the State Forest are guided
by management plans approved by the SLB. An integrated
planning process on the State Forest, designed
to incorporate all resource planning on the State
Forest into one document, was completed in May,
2001. Vital to the management process is the State
Forest Advisory Committee, a group of interested
citizen stakeholders. In addition to having provided
input to the integrated planning process, the
Advisory Committee continues to provide advice
to the SLB and the management agencies on a variety
of issues on the State Forest.
Current Work Plans can be found on the SLB
website.
