What We Do

The Colorado State Forest Service Volunteer Program provides opportunities for people to learn about forestry and natural resources issues through experiential learning.

One Vision for the program is to garner public understanding of forestry’s role and value in a healthy environment.

Our Mission is to achieve stewardship of Colorado’s environment through forestry outreach and service. We provide stewardship opportunities in rural and urban settings to mitigate the damaging effects of wildfire, insects, disease, wind, water, and people. Additionally, volunteer opportunities are organized to convey how the Colorado State Forest Service serves Colorado residents and facilitates responsible land management.

Volunteers are involved in many aspects of our State Forest Service efforts including, but not limited to: wildfire and fuels mitigation; education and public awareness; urban forestry; tree plantings; trail design and construction; watershed protection; insect and disease assistance; and general community and/or landowner assistance.

The Colorado State Forest Service has different levels of volunteer commitment. There are short term projects, group projects, or one-time special projects. We encourage all volunteers to participate in our Volunteer Forest Steward program. This program focuses on training and education and includes an initial 6-8 hour training course. This course includes:

  • A general history about the Colorado State Forest Service. (Who we are)
  • Trees 101 – an introductory tree course.
  • The art and science of public relations- volunteers as ambassadors.
  • An introduction and discussion about forest ecology and forest management.

From Ryan:
Colorado became my home in 1998 after graduating with a Natural Resources Conservation Law (A.A.S.) degree from Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua NY. I graduated in 2001 from Colorado State Universities College of Natural Resources, Forestry Department with a degree in Natural Resources Management and a minor in Rangeland Ecology. As an undergraduate student, I was a teaching assistant for the Forestry Field Measurements class and the Natural Resources Ecology and Measurements class at Pingree Park. I enjoyed the mountain campus so much; I worked there for two seasons. As a graduate student at CSU, I was the teaching assistant for the tree identification class under Rocky Coleman. Recently I completed a Master of Science in Forestry with a focus in natural resource policy.

In my spare time I am a volunteer board member on the City of Fort Collins Natural Resources Advisory Board (Chairperson), Secretary/Treasurer for the Longs Peak Chapter of the Society of American Foresters, play ice hockey, golf and other traditional outdoor sports, operate a small business and play music.

I have a deep appreciation for our forests and natural resources. Whether for wood products, water, wildlife, or any value forests hold for you, we can all agree our forests are special places.
