The Forestry Fair held in Fort Collins on Sept. 17 was a great success, thank you to all who contributed.

The event provided great networking opportunities for CSFS and our partners, as well as many interactive learning activities for the public. The event was sponsored by CSFS and WCNR, and:

  • More than 15 other natural resources agencies, organizations and industry members participated
  • 50 plus volunteers assisted
  • Approximately 200 interested community members attended
  • Many CSU and Front Range Community College students attended or volunteered

A Day Packed with Forestry Activities and Demonstrations

The CSU Logging Sports Team showed off their skills; and CSFS joined trained volunteers to demo the chipper and sawmill. Other equipment displayed included the Aphis' "don't move firewood trailer," a tree sprayer and a portable wood burner. A nearby woodlot area offered tree felling operations and lessons on forest measurements and mountain pine beetle.

Meanwhile, the booth area was busy with interactive displays, including tree and wildlife identification, tree cookie activities, Puppet Tree shows, and Smokey Bear. Booth displays included information for all ages and many attendees used the time to explore natural resources career opportunities. People also seemed to enjoy the Hog Wild BBQ lunch.

Tours of the engine shop and nursery were popular attractions. There is no doubt that the biggest smiles of the day were on the faces of visitors, both young and old, who watched and sprayed water and foam; the engine shop certainly knows how to draw a crowd.

Nursery tours offered a behind the scenes look our fields, greenhouses and the cooler. Tours at the nursery were led by both CSFS employees and volunteers.

Thanks to all who gave their time and energy to this event!

We had a enjoyable, safe and well-organized Forestry Fair.

Many of our partners were appreciative of our efforts and seemed eager to do it again in 2012. We will be pulling together a committee and hope to make this an annual event. We would also like to consider offering it at other locations across the state. If you would like to get involved in our 2012 planning, please contact Jamie Dahl or Sara Colorosa.
